Who will be FC Bayern’s new coach? Bayern legend Mehmet Scholl has now surprisingly brought another former FCB superstar into discussion for the post: Lothar Matthäus.
Ex-Bayern star Mehmet Scholl has brought up his former team-mate Lothar Matthäus as a candidate for the coaching position at FC Bayern.
Scholl told BILD about Matthäus: „I learnt an incredible amount from him. He was by far my best team-mate. He can’t lose. He knows this club like the back of his hand.“
According to Scholl, Matthäus has „made a great development“. The 53-year-old explained: „I really enjoy listening to him as a pundit. What he says is right. The players will follow a man like that – always.“
Scholl on Matthäus: „He would do well“
Scholl summarised: „I think Lothar would be a great solution for everyone involved.“ Matthäus has „his own head, the knowledge, an attitude and he doesn’t allow himself to be talked into it“, said Scholl: „He’s not really controllable, but I think that’s a good thing.“
„He would do well if you trust him,“ predicted the 1996 European champion.
Matthäus has had his differences with Bayern greats Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the past. However, Scholl assured: „But that has been resolved.“
As a coach, Matthäus coached the national teams of Hungary and Bulgaria, among others. The record-breaking international had ruled out a commitment to FC Bayern as recently as March on Sky.
Munich are still looking for a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who has to leave the club after the season. The current national coach Julian Nagelsmann is considered the top favourite. However, Unai Emery from Aston Villa in the Premier League and Austrian national team coach Ralf Rangnick are also rumoured to be candidates for the position.
