Josip Stanisic also made football history in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic season. He was one of the few players to win the Bundesliga championship with two different clubs in succession. The last time August Starek achieved this feat was in the late 1960s.
Leverkusen are at the top of the Bundesliga thanks in part to Bayern loanee Josip Stanisic. The 24-year-old right-back has impressed with consistently strong performances for the Werkself, particularly in the second half of the season. The defender has thus entered an exclusive list: after August „Gustl“ Starek, he is only the second player to win the league title with two different teams in consecutive seasons.
The story of Starek, who won the championship with 1. FC Nürnberg in 1968 and FC Bayern in 1969, had no parallel for a long time. The Austrian played for the Munich club from 1968 to 1970. But this season, Stanisic has repeated this rare feat. His goal in the match against Bayern Munich, when he scored the first goal in the 3-0 victory, will remain in the memory of the record champions‘ fans.
Bayern regret signing Stanisic
The German record champions, on the other hand, regret the loan of Stanisic not only because of Bayer Leverkusen’s German championship. During the first half of the season, coach Thomas Tuchel repeatedly had personnel problems at right-back and in central defence, where Stanisic can also play.
While Bayer Leverkusen have benefited from this loan, Bayern Munich will bring Stanisic back into their team next season. As a home-grown talent, he should be firmly integrated into the Munich team in the future. Munich will be keen not to repeat such a mistake, as Leverkusen do not have the option to buy him.
