The coaching position at FC Bayern Munich remains a hotly debated topic. With the imminent departure of Thomas Tuchel, various names are in the spotlight, including the possible return of Julian Nagelsmann. A Munich player has now been asked about a possible return of the 36-year-old coach.
Centre-back Matthijs de Ligt commented on the discussion surrounding the future coaching line-up at FC Bayern. After the win against 1. FC Köln, he spoke about his experiences with Nagelsmann: „I have a good relationship with him, I worked well with him last year. But he’s now the national coach. We’ll see who becomes our coach for the new season.“
Julian Nagelsmann, who coached Munich until March 2023 before being replaced by Thomas Tuchel, is now the national coach. His contract with the DFB expires after the home European Championships, fuelling speculation about his return. Although the German Football Association would like to extend Nagelsmann’s contract, it recently seemed as if the young coach was hesitating – because of FC Bayern?
Nagelsmann is considered the top favourite
While the coaching question remains open, doubts are growing internally about other candidates such as Roberto De Zerbi, who is considered the third option according to reports in BILD. „It’s important that we do the right thing, not the quickest thing,“ explained sporting director Christoph Freund, without specifically mentioning Nagelsmann. However, internal circles say that Nagelsmann is currently the top favourite to succeed Tuchel.
Honorary President Uli Hoeneß and Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl appear to be positive about Nagelsmann’s return, whereas former club boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is sceptical. A decision on who will be the new Bayern coach from the summer is expected to be made in April.
