Speculation surrounding the future of Alexander Nübel continues. Although he is playing an impressive season at VfB Stuttgart, in which he has made a significant contribution to the team’s current Champions League position, his future is currently uncertain.

TV pundit and ex-Bayern player Lothar Matthäus shared his insights on Nübel and revealed what is going on behind the scenes. „Nübel will extend his contract at Bayern, but he won’t return to Bayern because Manuel Neuer is there. He wants to play and as long as Manuel is there, no other goalkeeper will be the regular goalkeeper,“ Matthäus said in an interview on Sky.

He is also certain: „He will take over from Manuel Neuer at some point.“ Recently, there have been increasing rumours that Nübel could become the regular goalkeeper after Neuer’s contract ends in the summer of 2025.

Currently, Nübel’s path to the number one position at the German record champions is still blocked by the presence of Neuer. Matthäus sees the solution in further loans: „As long as Neuer is there, Nübel will be loaned out to a club where he can prove his qualities not only nationally, but also internationally.“

In the current season, Nübel has impressed with consistently strong performances in Stuttgart. Most recently, he made outstanding saves to secure VfB’s important away win in Dortmund. The win puts VfB seven points ahead of Leipzig and Dortmund in third place in the table – level on points with FC Bayern.

Stuttgart „the first port of call“ for Nübel

Despite the uncertain future, Nübel was relaxed about his plans. In an interview with Sky, he emphasised that there are many options and that he feels comfortable in Stuttgart, which does not rule out another loan. „We’ll see what I decide in the end. VfB is the first port of call, as I’m still on loan there.“

For the time being, however, Nübel’s focus is on the current season and the goal of making it into the Champions League with Stuttgart. „Of course we want to play in the Champions League. We’ve collected so many points this season and now we want to go all the way. That’s our motivation internally,“ said Nübel.
