FC Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at FC Arsenal on Tuesday could be the final match for coach Thomas Tuchel. The Munich management apparently already have a plan as to who could take over until the end of the season.
What happens if FC Bayern also lose at Arsenal FC on Tuesday after the home defeat against Borussia Dortmund and the embarrassment in Heidenheim?
According to the Münchner Abendzeitung, the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League could be the last chance for coach Thomas Tuchel.
If the situation becomes irreparable and Tuchel has to leave immediately, the report suggests that Miroslav Klose could take over as interim coach and Hermann Gerland could support him as assistant.
This scenario is therefore an emergency solution that is being considered in the event of a „total catastrophe“.
Klose and Gerland were Flick’s assistant coaches
Klose and Gerland already worked together at Bayern: In the 2020/21 season, both were assistant coaches to head coach Hansi Flick. That season, the team won the DFL Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, became Club World Champions and German champions.
The Bayern bosses actually wanted to bring the season to a close with Tuchel. But the 2-0 home defeat to BVB and the embarrassing 3-2 loss at newly promoted 1. FC Heidenheim raised doubts again.
Following the embarrassment, FCB’s sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that Tuchel would still be on the bench in London. However, Eberl did not rule out the possibility of the 50-year-old having to leave before the end of the season.
Eberl said the following about Tuchel staying until the end of the season: „I can’t answer that definitively right now.“
The Champions League is Bayern’s only chance of winning a title this season. FCB were eliminated early from the DFB Cup by third-division side Saarbrücken, while they are 16 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the championship.
