The discussion about the long-term successor to Manuel Neuer at FC Bayern Munich is gathering pace. Alexander Nübel, currently on loan at VfB Stuttgart, is increasingly becoming the centre of attention. His impressive performances in the current season have not only made those responsible at the record champions sit up and take notice.
According to Sport BILD, Nübel is currently the top favourite to succeed Manuel Neuer. Uli Hoeneß, who has apparently outed himself as a big fan of the 27-year-old goalkeeper, seems to be playing a decisive role in this development. Nübel’s strong performances in Stuttgart have earned him a lot of recognition and significantly increased his chances of returning to Bayern Munich as a regular goalkeeper.

With 28 competitive matches for VfB Stuttgart this season, eleven of which were clean sheets and only 34 goals conceded, Nübel has made a significant contribution to the Swabians‘ current success. Third place in the table and a realistic chance of qualifying for the Champions League are due in no small part to his efforts. Stuttgart would like to keep the goalkeeper for the coming season.
Neuer’s contract expires in 2025
BILD recently reported that Bayern Munich see Nübel as a long-term option for the goalkeeping position. Plans for a contract extension until 2029 are currently being discussed, and a further loan to VfB Stuttgart for the coming season already appears to be a done deal. Nübel could then return to Munich in 2025 when Manuel Neuer’s contract expires. However, a scenario in which the ex-Schalker returns as number two behind Neuer seems out of the question.
However, the situation could come to a head if Nübel does not agree to extend his contract, which runs until 2025. A sale next summer would then be an option, with a transfer fee of 13 to 15 million euros being mooted. Interested parties from abroad, including Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma, have already expressed their interest.
