Zinedine Zidane has repeatedly been mentioned as a candidate in FC Bayern’s search for a coach. However, one TV pundit does not consider the Frenchman to be a suitable candidate. There is a reason for this.
Lothar Matthäus would remove Zinedine Zidane from the list of candidates in FC Bayern’s coaching search.
The record international told BILD: „A very big name, but he is no longer one of my favourites. He was world champion, European champion, world footballer, achieved everything as a player and was also very successful as a coach at Real. So his successes would be a good fit for FC Bayern.“
However, TV pundit Matthäus qualified: „But you also have to look at the language. English should be the minimum you need to speak as a coach at Bayern.“
Zidane won the Champions League three times as a coach
Zidane struggles with English. It has been said several times that he does not want to take over a club from Germany or England because of the language barrier. In addition to his native French, Zidane also speaks Spanish and Italian.
On the other hand, Bayern could secure a real world star with Zidane. As a professional, the 51-year-old won practically everything. As a coach, he won the Champions League three times with Real Madrid, among other honours.
For a long time, the motto at FC Bayern was that the head coach should also speak German. However, FCB President Herbert Hainer recently explained: „Not speaking German is not an exclusion criterion for us. We are looking for the best solution for FC Bayern and we also have an international team. A coach can also act non-verbally.“
The top candidate in the search for a new Bayern coach is currently Roberto De Zerbi from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Italian does not speak German either, but has at least been able to communicate in English since his time in the Premier League.
