FC Bayern are looking into bringing back Julian Nagelsmann. The 36-year-old is one of the favourites to succeed Thomas Tuchel. The DFB, meanwhile, is hoping that Nagelsmann will stay.

While those responsible in Munich are not yet in agreement as to whether a comeback by Julian Nagelsmann is the ideal solution to the coaching problem at the German record champions, the DFB is actively working on an extension.

As revealed by BILD, the German Football Association would like to extend the 36-year-old’s expiring contract as quickly as possible. According to the newspaper, Frankfurt is already preparing a concrete offer until the 2026 World Cup.

DFB vice-president Hans Joachim-Watzke has now made it clear that the association should not take its time: „They should now try to extend Julian’s contract. And if the DFB manages to keep him under contract for longer, that would be good for German football,“ he explained on the Spielmacher podcast.

Watzke wants to stay out of the Nagelsmann debate

However, the 64-year-old himself does not want to get involved in the Nagelsmann case, presumably also because Nagelsmann has recently been linked with a contract at Borussia Dortmund: „I’m staying out of it a little so that nobody says I’ve exerted any influence.“

Watzke is convinced that Nagelsmann’s expiring contract should be extended regardless of the outcome of the European Championship: „Julian knows how to play football. He is very conceptual, he has the right mix. He was at Hoffenheim, he was at Leipzig, he was at Bayern – Julian has been successful at every club so far. If you’re successful at three different clubs, then you have a good CV.“

Nagelsmann himself recently emphasised that he could well imagine staying with the DFB. According to rumours, however, he is more inclined to return to club football, where he can work with a team or players on a daily basis.
