Even after the 2-0 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund, the most important topic at FC Bayern is the search for a new coach. FCB President Herbert Hainer is now putting the sporting management around Max Eberl and Christoph Freund in charge.

The search for a coach at FC Bayern continues. Top candidate Xabi Alonso is not available, so the Munich management must now find another solution. Following the 2-0 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund, Bayern president Herbert Hainer called on the sporting management around sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund to fulfil their duties.

On the sidelines of the Bayern women’s DFB Cup victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at the FCB Campus, Hainer said on Sky: „We have a sporting management team with Max Eberl and Christoph Freund who are working intensively on this. We have a list of coaches who we are happy to work with and now the boys have to do their job. As soon as there is something to announce, we will do it.“

Following Alonso’s rejection, the current favourites in Munich appear to be Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann. De Zerbi is currently coach at Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League. The Italian has an exit clause with the „Segaulls“, which would allow him to leave the club after the season for around €14 million.

Hainer on failure against BVB: „We were too static“

Nagelsmann would succeed his own successor if he returned. FC Bayern parted ways with him in March 2023 and brought in Thomas Tuchel as the new coach. Nagelsmann then accepted the job as national coach, but his contract expires after the home European Championships in the summer.

Meanwhile, Hainer was disappointed by Bayern’s defeat at home to BVB: „FC Bayern wasn’t the FC Bayern we’re used to and that we like to see and, to be fair, it wasn’t the first time this season that we didn’t get going,“ said the 69-year-old.

He continued: „We deserved to lose against Dortmund. We were too static, not aggressive enough, had far too little passion and you could see that on the pitch.“
