Matthäus: Not everyone at Bayern is open to a Nagelsmann comeback

After the setback with Xabi Alonso, FC Bayern is currently exploring the alternatives on the coaching market at full speed. According to consistent reports, Julian Nagelsmann is one of them. A return of the 36-year-old is said to be a serious topic at Säbener Straße. According to Lothar Matthäus, however, there are also people within FCB who are not enthusiastic about a Nagelsmann comeback.

While numerous coach names were being bandied about at FC Bayern just a few weeks ago, the list of concrete options seems to be getting smaller and smaller. According to the pay-TV channel, there are currently only two real top candidates: Robert De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann.

Record international Lothar Matthäus has spoken out in favour of a comeback for Nagelsmann: „I could well imagine a return for Julian Nagelsmann. He has some advocates at the club,“ explained the TV pundit in an interview with Sky.

Nagelsmann would „certainly listen“ to Bayern’s enquiry

Even though Nagelsmann was shown the door in Munich „overnight“ just under a year ago, Matthäus is certain that the current national coach is open to a comeback at the record champions: „I believe that Julian Nagelsmann would definitely listen to the dialogue that Bayern would then have to seek. My favourite is Julian Nagelsmann because he’s from Munich, he has his family here.“

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen recently emphasised that a return of Nagelsmann was not categorically ruled out. Honorary president and club patron Uli Hoeneß also seems to be in favour of the idea. Hoeneß has repeatedly emphasised in recent months that the dismissal in March 2023 was a mistake.

What is interesting is that, according to Matthäus, there is definitely resistance at Säbener Straße with regard to Nagelsmann: „At Bayern Munich, you need a few advocates to push the deal through. If everyone was in favour now, Julian Nagelsmann would probably be in the office tomorrow. But he’s not. That’s why there are probably one or two people who aren’t in favour.“

According to his own statements, the 63-year-old knows who has positioned themselves against Nagelsmann within FCB, but he does not want to reveal this publicly.
