The rumour mill surrounding Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso continues to churn. While FC Bayern Munich and Liverpool FC are looking for new coaches for the coming season, the Spaniard’s true destiny could lie elsewhere.
According to ex-Bayern player and football expert Lothar Matthäus, Alonso is highly regarded in Leverkusen, but his heart beats for a future at Real Madrid. „I would like to see Xabi Alonso stay at Leverkusen. After Klopp, it would be a big shoe to fill at Liverpool. I know that Alonso’s big dream is to become a coach at Real Madrid one day,“ Matthäus said at a sponsor meeting. The statement is likely to further fuel speculation surrounding the Spaniard.
According to Sport BILD, this would also be a model that could derail Munich’s efforts to recruit Alonso. According to the report, the coach could stay at Leverkusen next season and become Carlo Ancelotti’s successor in 2025 or 2026.
However, transfer expert Florian Plettenberg from Sky recently stated that Bayern are confident of a transfer next summer. „They are confident that they will sign him. They are stepping on the gas. There have been talks, but no negotiations. It’s difficult to get him, but Bayern are confident,“ said Plettenberg.
Alonso with exit clause for ex-clubs
Alonso, who is currently under contract at Bayer Leverkusen, has made himself a sought-after top coach thanks to his outstanding work and is on the wish list of some of the world’s biggest clubs. However, with Real Madrid in mind and a current contract with Ancelotti until 2026, Alonso’s path seems to be mapped out. Speculation suggests that he could stay in Leverkusen and succeed Carlo Ancelotti at the Whites a year later.
Alonso is rumoured to have an exit clause of between 15 and 20 million euros, which would allow him to move to one of his former clubs. The 42-year-old leads the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, 10 points ahead of FC Bayern. The Werkself are also in the DFB Cup semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
