Due to his suspension, FC Bayern’s Leroy Sané can currently only watch on for the German national team. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has now commented on the attacking player’s situation. He expects Sané to „fit in“.
Judging by the statements of national coach Julian Nagelsmann, it doesn’t seem so certain that Bayern star Leroy Sané will have a starting eleven place at the European Championship.
At the press conference ahead of the clash with the Netherlands on Tuesday, Nagelsmann said of the suspended Sané: „If you look at the current group, it works on an interpersonal level. Leroy is a great guy. For him, it’s also about fitting in. The three-match ban is a burden.“
Sané was shown the red card for an unnecessary offence in the test match in Austria in November and was banned for three games as a result.
Nagelsmann on Sané: „He has a very good character“
Nagelsmann continued about Sané: „For him, as for everyone else, it’s about fitting in. We’re talking about roles. He has a very good character. He’s joining a well-functioning group.
When asked whether this was a character test for Sané, Nagelsmann joked: „I didn’t talk about a character test. I said he has to fit in, that’s a big difference. I don’t want to read a headline saying ‚Nagelsmann gives Sané a character test‘. Then there’ll be a complaint from my media lawyer … Just kidding, I don’t have one.“
On the one hand, the break could come at just the right time for Sané, as he has recently been struggling with pain in his patella tendon and groin area. On the other hand, he won’t be able to draw attention to himself in the test matches before the European Championship, while other team-mates can use the opportunity to play themselves into the game.“
The group is working so well at the moment that Nagelsmann will probably use the same starting eleven for the match against the Netherlands in Frankfurt as in the 2-0 win in France: „The game was intense, but the plan is to keep the same team as against France,“ explained the national coach.
