FC Bayern are still looking for a new coach. The return of Julian Nagelsmann has already been mentioned several times as an option. Lothar Matthäus doesn’t think that’s so far-fetched.
For record international Lothar Matthäus, a return of Julian Nagelsmann to the FC Bayern coaching bench would have a special appeal. In his column on Sky, Matthäus wrote: „I don’t know if he’s at the top of FC Bayern’s list, but a return to Munich would be something very special.“
The 63-year-old continued: „I already thought at the time that it was a mistake to leave him. For me, Nagelsmann was a good fit for Bayern Munich.“
Nagelsmann was suspended from FC Bayern almost exactly a year ago and was replaced by Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel is now on the brink of leaving the German record champions after the current season.
Matthäus on Nagelsmann: „Offers from clubs that are interested in him“
Former chairman Oliver Kahn and ex-sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic were primarily responsible for Nagelsmann’s departure. Both are no longer in office. So could there be a new attempt with Nagelsmann?
Matthäus explained: „Whether he does it again, albeit with different managers and under a different hierarchy, is up to him.“
For the ex-Bayern professional, however, it would also be possible for Nagelsmann to remain national coach after the European Championship. He commented: „There has been a lot of discussion about Nagelsmann’s future recently and it is currently being discussed. I would like this to be discussed behind closed doors and not in public.“
Matthäus added: „I could imagine that it would be a great challenge for Julian to shape an era with the national team, but I assume that at his age he wants to work with a team on a daily basis and I think that he has offers from clubs that interest him.“
