In addition to the signing of Harry Kane, the search for a new defensive midfielder was also a dominant topic at FC Bayern last summer. Even though Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel and the German record champions will part ways in the summer, the search for a holding six could once again become a hot topic at Säbener Straße this summer.
Last summer in particular, the search for a new defensive midfielder developed into a real ongoing issue at the Isar. After all, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel even publicly expressed his desire for a holding six to the club bosses on several occasions. However, the Munich side were too late to fulfil this request, with the result that Joao Palhinha’s transfer, which had almost seemed certain, fell through on deadline day.
Eberl wants to „keep his eyes open“ in the defensive midfield
Even though Thomas Tuchel will no longer be on the FC Bayern touchline next season, the search for a new midfielder could still continue.
In an interview with Sport BILD, new sporting director Max Eberl did not categorically rule out the signing of a holding midfielder. „Defensive midfield is a squad area in which we are keeping our eyes open,“ said the 50-year-old.
At the same time, however, Eberl also indicated that the new coach’s playing philosophy will also play a decisive role in this matter: „But it also depends on how we want to play football. Bayern have almost always played 4-2-3-1 in the past, so there was no single six in that sense.“ According to Eberl, a change in system could also lead to other players who are currently unhappy being given a different role.
As sporting director Max Eberl has already rightly explained, the ideas of the future coach should also be taken into account, especially with potential new signings, in order to adapt the squad ideally to the new coach’s style of play. Accordingly, the search for a holding six could really pick up speed again next summer, provided the new head coach’s playing philosophy also envisages a sole defensive midfielder.
