As the European Championship in Germany draws closer, the discussions about national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s possible European Championship squad begin. Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the former chairman of the board, shared their views on the situation of Leon Goretzka and Leroy Sané. Both will not be involved in the national team’s upcoming friendlies for different reasons.
The national team coach Julian Nagelsmann caused a stir when he decided not to nominate Goretzka for the upcoming friend lies against France and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, Sané is missing due to suspension following a foul.
Uli Hoeneß, speaking on the sidelines of an exhibition in honour of Sepp Maier, was understanding about Goretzka’s current non-nomination. „Some people have to say to themselves: ‚Okay, what we’ve done over the last 12 months wasn’t good enough‘ and then you have to take the consequences,“ said Hoeneß, reflecting on the team’s recent performances.
Goretzka „fell into a fountain of youth“
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge expressed his surprise at the decision not to invite Goretzka, especially given his current form. „If I’m honest, I was surprised that he wasn’t invited because he’s playing well right now,“ said Rummenigge. The 68-year-old recalled previous call-ups during less convincing phases for the 28-year-old.
Hoeneß was particularly hopeful about Leroy Sané. Despite the winger’s current suspension, Hoeneß is convinced: „Sané will definitely be involved.“ He also believes Goretzka has a good chance of being named: „I’m also confident about Leon Goretzka,“ emphasised Hoeneß, praising his recent performances. „He hasn’t played so well for a long time and now in the last few weeks he has suddenly fallen into a fountain of youth and is once again someone who is taking charge and playing really well.“
