Jamal Musiala has been given a new number in the national team. This change could also be an anticipation of a possible move to FC Bayern.
A new change for Jamal Musiala in the DFB team: The Bayern star will now play with the number 10. This was announced by Sky reporter Kerry Hau on X. Until now, Musiala wore the number 14 in the German national team.
The classic playmaker number expresses the role that Musiala plays in the German team. Together with Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, he is expected to direct Germany’s attacking play. At the 2022 World Cup, Serge Gnabry still played with the number 10.
Musiala in the footsteps of Netzer and Matthäus
Musiala is following in big footsteps. Günther Netzer and Lothar Matthäus used this number to lead Germany to the 1972 European Championship title and the 1990 World Cup title respectively, while Mesut Özil also wore the number 10 in the DFB team.
Leroy Sané currently wears it at Bayern. But wouldn’t it suit Musiala better? The 21-year-old has the 42 on his back at FCB. This has to do with the fact that he once made his Bundesliga debut for FC Bayern as a youth player and no lower number was available.
In the meantime, he no longer wants to give it up out of superstition. But perhaps he will change his mind soon. Sané’s contract expires in the summer of 2025. Whether the contract will be extended is currently completely unclear.
The legendary playmaker’s number could therefore also soon become available at the record champions.
