Following Christian Streich’s surprise announcement that he would be leaving SC Freiburg at the end of the season, rumours about his future have been swirling. While some fans dream of seeing him in the role of coach at a top club such as FC Bayern Munich or even as national coach, cult commentator Marcel Reif does not believe that the Baden native will take on such an intensive role.
In the BILD programme „Reif ist live“, Marcel Reif made a clear statement about Streich’s future prospects after his announced retirement in the summer: „I think the big stage is over for him.“ Reif emphasised that the enormous demands and pressure that come with managing a top club or the national team could possibly be too much for Streich.
Back in October, the still-Freiburg coach said tellingly in an interview with 11 Freunde: „I can feel that I’m getting older. My strength is dwindling, it’s foreseeable.“
There have recently been rumours that Christian Streich could be a candidate for the coaching position at Munich from the summer. Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß has already revealed in the past that the club had considered Streich as a potential head coach. Hoeneß also said of the 58-year-old in an interview: „I love him.“
Workload in Munich too high?
Despite this high level of recognition in Munich, Reif remains sceptical about the possibility of seeing Streich in such a stressful position. He does not believe in Streich’s future at FC Bayern and expects the coach to take a break or take on a role with less responsibility.
The future of the German national team’s coaching position is also a hot topic. Current national team coach Julian Nagelsmann’s contract ends after the European Championships in the summer. While rumours are circulating that Nagelsmann could possibly return to club football, Reif does not believe that Streich will take over: „And there will be another national team coach. I don’t think he’s terribly tempted by it either.“
