FC Bayern will face FC Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. In an interview with BILD am Sonntag, Lothar Matthäus dares to make a prediction for the last eight.
After a disappointing 0:1 in the first leg, Bayern won the second leg against Lazio Rome convincingly with 3:0. The subsequent draw revealed that the German record champions will face the current Premier League leaders in the quarter-finals of the top flight: Arsenal FC.
The Gunners narrowly beat FC Porto in the round of 16. Here too, the favourites lost the first leg away from home 0:1, but the second leg went to a penalty shoot-out, which the club from North London won 4:2 in the end.
Lothar Matthäus believes in FC Bayern
For former Bayern player Lothar Matthäus, Arsenal FC is by no means an easy draw. „Arsenal aren’t just Kai Havertz, who is now making his mark on the team and scoring important goals. It’s a fine, technically good and fast team,“ enthused the 1990 World Cup winner.
The team has „grown together under coach Arteta to such an extent that, despite strong competition in England, they are at the top“ of the Premier League and have realistic „title chances“.
The 62-year-old explained that for Bayern it would be „a matter of team unity in order to eliminate the vulnerability of the opponent’s quick transition play and to stop the passes to the fast Arsenal wingers in midfield“.
However, Matthäus firmly believes that his favourite club will progress: „The quality of Bayern’s first 15 players is outstanding. They will progress.“
In the past, FC Bayern have shown the Gunners their limits time and time again. The Munich side have won all of their last three matches 5:1.
