Bayern signed Sacha Boey and Eric Dier last winter in response to the extremely tight personnel situation in defence. While Dier impressed from the start with his strong performances, Boey has yet to really get going.

Injury worries and the continental championships in Asia and Africa meant that Thomas Tuchel had hardly any skilled defenders at his disposal in the winter. In the meantime, Raphael Guerreiro had to help out in the right-back position.

Bayern bosses therefore reacted on the transfer market and signed Sacha Boey from Galatasaray Istanbul, among others. The right-back cost 30 million euros in transfer fees – to which a further five could be added in potential bonus payments – making him the German record champions‘ most expensive new winter signing to date.

After making his Bayern debut as a substitute against FC Augsburg, he made his first starting appearance against league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. In the 3-0 debacle, Boey had to help out in the unfamiliar left-back position and was visibly overwhelmed. Shortly afterwards, the Frenchman suffered a fibre tear in his left thigh in training and has not featured since.

Doubts about Boey’s qualities

According to BILD, there are now „initial doubts about the record new signing’s suitability for Bayern“. According to the report, Boey is very quick, but has weaknesses in the technical area. He also has a lot of catching up to do in terms of tactical understanding.

Thomas Tuchel is said to have favoured a transfer of Premier League star Kieran Trippier from the outset. According to kicker, new sporting director Max Eberl would also have refrained from signing Boey.

Transfer in the summer?

A departure next summer therefore does not appear to be out of the question. The 23-year-old currently has three strong competitors in his position: Konrad Laimer, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Kimmich. Josip Stanisic will also return to Munich from his loan spell at Leverkusen in the summer. Bayern have also been repeatedly linked with the transfer of Jeremie Frimpong.

Meanwhile, there should be no shortage of interested parties for Boey. Several top English clubs are said to have been interested in the former French U21 international as early as this winter. Boey’s contract in Munich is valid until 2028 and his market value is €22 million according to Transfermarkt.de.
