FC Bayern Munich is expanding its horizons in its search for promising talent. The Munich club has set its sights on the young FC Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi.
At just 17 years of age, Cubarsi has established himself as a regular in Xavi Hernandez’s team and impresses with consistently good performances. His most recent performance over a full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win against RCD Mallorca underlines his potential and importance to the Barça team.
According toa report in Mundo Deportivo, Cubarsi is not only highly rated by Bayern, but also by other top European clubs. Manchester City, Chelsea FC and Arsenal London, among others, are rumoured to be courting the youngster. The rumours of interest from the German record champions are nothing new. Spanish sources reported the Munich club’s potential courtship weeks ago.
Cubarsi, who trained at the renowned La Masia academy, has established himself in the Barça starting eleven since the beginning of the year. The young centre-back has put in some impressive performances alongside footballing greats such as Ilkay Gündogan, Joao Felix and Robert Lewandowski.
Cubarsi tends to stay at Barca
Despite his contract with Barcelona, which runs until 2026, an allegedly low exit clause of less than ten million euros is attracting interest from international clubs. However, Barcelona are planning to extend Cubarsi’s contract as soon as possible. They want to drastically increase the buy-out clause to one billion euros in order to tie the young star to them in the long term. Cubarsi is said to have already received a corresponding contract offer.
Although there is a risk that top international clubs could poach Cubarsi, the young defender is currently said to be leaning towards staying at Barcelona and continuing his career with the Catalan giants. Further contract talks are expected to take place soon.
Cubarsi would not be the first Barca defender on Bayern’s wish list: Munich are also said to remain interested in defender Ronald Araujo of the Catalans.
