FC Bayern has an advocate in its bid for Xabi Alonso. For Dieter Hoeneß, the Leverkusen coach is the perfect fit for Munich. The former Bayern striker gives reasons for his opinion.
It is clear that Xabi Alonso is Bayern’s preferred candidate to succeed coach Thomas Tuchel. Sporting director Max Eberl emphasised at the weekend that there had not yet been any direct talks with Alonso.
It is clear, however, that Bayern will certainly step up their efforts to woo the Spaniard in the coming months. Alonso is plan A.
Dieter Hoeneß has now spoken out in favour of this Plan A. According to Hoeneß, Alonso is a perfect fit for FC Bayern. The brother of honorary president Uli Hoeneß is convinced that the 42-year-old „would be the right man, even if the Leverkusen fans don’t want to hear it,“ said the 71-year-old on BILD Live.
The former Bayern striker also gave reasons for his opinion: „It’s enormously important that you reach the players. Xabi Alonso reaches the players. You could already see that when he was a player here.“
Hoeneß does not believe in Liverpool transfer
Alonso played for the record champions from 2014 to 2017 and shone as a strategist in midfield during this time. He won the Champions League with both Liverpool FC and Real Madrid. According to Hoeneß, Alonso’s successes are now also benefiting him as a coach: „He has a natural authority who has gained great respect through his own career.“
Alonso is also one of Liverpool’s coaching candidates. The Reds are currently looking for a successor to Jürgen Klopp, who is leaving Anfield Road in the summer after nine years. Hoeneß, who also advises Bayern loanee Josip Stanisic, among others, does not believe that Alonso will take over from Klopp. He is „not convinced that he will go to Liverpool.“
English media have also recently reported that Bayern are favourites to sign Alonso. First of all, however, the Spaniard wants to focus on the season with Leverkusen. In addition, a transfer fee of 25 million euros would reportedly be due for Alonso, whose contract with Bayer runs until 2026.
