Leon Goretzka has had a very mixed season so far. As a top earner in the Bayern squad, he was quickly criticised and there was speculation about his departure after the season. Following his top performance against Mainz, the international has now spoken out about his future.
Leon Goretzka put in a strong performance in FC Bayern’s 8:1 thumping of Mainz 05: the midfielder scored two goals and set up two others.
After the game, the 29-year-old was asked about his plans for the future, as there has been repeated speculation about his early departure.
Goretzka said: „If I’m honest, I’m not worried about that at all at the moment, I think that’s the club’s job. We are fully focussed on the season.“
Goretzka still has a contract in Munich until 2026 and is set to earn around €18 million per year. There have recently been reports of Juventus‘ interest in the German international.
Goretzka: A visit from friends as motivation
As Goretzka wants to fully focus on the season anyway, he also preferred to talk about his four points against Mainz: „I don’t think I’ve ever had that before,“ said the former Schalke player: „I got a special visit today from friends and acquaintances who I haven’t seen for a long time. They said, we’ve been here before, now you have to score a goal again. It’s actually no longer possible in my position, the way I’m playing now. The fact that it worked out today with four scoring points is of course a funny story.“
He said of the win against Mainz: „It was a very convincing win for us. We played a very good and very consistent game over 90 minutes and finally scored a lot of goals again and it’s obviously a lot more fun that way.“
