After an explosion of performance at FC Bayern: Dier dreams of taking part in the European Championships
The signing of Eric Dier in the winter was dismissed by many Bayern fans and experts as an emergency solution. In the meantime, the 30-year-old Englishman has proved to be a real top transfer and is hoping for a comeback in the England national team after his explosion in performance.
From benchwarmer in London to regular in Munich. Eric Dier’s story over the past few weeks is as simple as that. The defensive all-rounder played just four games for Tottenham Hotspur in the entire first half of the season. Dier has already made seven appearances for FC Bayern.
Even though the Munich winter signing has of course benefited from injuries and suspension recently, Dier has impressed on the pitch. The defender has made three consecutive appearances in the starting eleven. Dier was also preferred to Minjae Kim in the important CL clash against Lazio Roma during the week.
With almost 100 touches and a pass rate of over 90 per cent, he was one of FCB’s best performers in the 3-0 win against the Italians. Dier also delivers in the Bundesliga: of the defenders who have played at least 500 minutes on the pitch, he is the only one in the league who has not even been outplayed by his direct opponent.
Participation in the European Championship? Dier: „Why not?“
His strong performances for FC Bayern could now lead to a comeback in the England national team. Dier has made 49 appearances for the Three Lions so far. However, he was last called up to the national team in March 2023.
The 30-year-old himself still has hopes that he can make the leap into England’s European Championship squad: „If I play for a club like Bayern and if I play well, I should have a good chance. Why not?“, he explained in an interview with The Sun.
Dier is firmly convinced that he has it in his own hands to make a comeback to the national team: „I haven’t spoken to Gareth Southgate, but it’s up to me to play well. The national team is a very simple thing. You try to play as well as you can for your club and everything else is out of your hands.“
