FC Bayern’s Aleksandar Pavlovic is one of Munich’s bright spots in what is currently a rather disappointing season. The 19-year-old midfielder is now on the verge of ending a long dry spell for the club in the German U21 national team.
According to reports from Sky, Pavlovic, who is currently getting a lot of starting appearances for Bayern, has been nominated for the U21 national team. This would be the first time since 2006 that an FC Bayern player has been nominated for the DFB U21 team.
In recent years, the DFB has called up many talented players from various German clubs to the U21 team. Clubs from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 as well as Hallesche FC from the 3rd division were represented, but no player from FC Bayern. The last time a Bayern player took part in the U21s was in 2006, when goalkeeper Michael Rensing played for Germany.
Pavlovic’s call-up to the U21s could end this long lull. The midfielder, who has played two U20 internationals for Germany so far, is expected to feature in the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Kosovo and Israel, according to Sky. U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo has been keeping a close eye on Pavlovic and an invitation is expected to be extended shortly.
Serbia interested in Pavlovic
The Serbian Football Association is also said to have shown interest in Pavlovic, but the player is currently reportedly favouring the German selection. Pavlovic’s nomination for the U21s could also be a step towards the senior national team, bringing the young player’s dream of playing for Germany at the highest level closer.
Participation with the German senior national team at the home European Championships next summer has been discussed time and again recently. Pavlovic himself said about a possible participation: „The home European Championship would be a dream of mine.“ However, national coach Julian Nagelsmann recently made it clear that Pavlovic is initially planned for the U21s.
