Thomas Müller is relieved after advancing in the Champions League. However, the veteran does not yet see redemption.

The 3:0 home win against Lazio Rome in the second leg of the round of 16 means FC Bayern are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. After the 1-0 defeat in the first leg, a win was urgently needed in the Allianz Arena – and the team delivered.

Thomas Müller spoke after the game about the positive mood in the team following the win: „We’re very happy, of course. We just want to savour this feeling – regardless of what was in the papers today or yesterday. The team absolutely deserved it today,“ said the 34-year-old on Prime Video.

After the defeat in the first leg at Lazio and the numerous points dropped in the Bundesliga, Bayern had been criticised a lot in recent weeks, with the club even announcing the departure of coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season.

Müller: „It did us good“

However, Müller also wants to see the positives – and felt that some of the criticism was exaggerated: „We’re not a complete shambles. We have problems on the pitch, that’s true – but everything was good today,“ continued the German international.

The draw for the quarter-finals of the top flight will take place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon on 15 March – by then we will know who our next opponents will be. However, Müller does not want to look that far ahead just yet: „Tomorrow we’ll have a day’s rest and then we’ll see,“ he said.

Commenting on the game against the very defensive-minded Romans, Müller said: „We all knew how important it was. It did us good. We implemented it well and had a good structure. We’re happy, we know we played a good game. It’s not redemption, but we’ve taken a very important step.“
