With Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, Bayern successfully took two absolute top stars out of the game in the CL round of 16. Now the Bavarians will have to deal with City „wonder striker“ Erling Haaland. According to Matthijs de Ligt, Bayern must stop the Norwegian together as a team.
Matthijs de Ligt has been one of FC Bayern’s absolute top performers for weeks. The Dutchman not only shines with his defensive play, but has also recently scored the FCB to an important 1:0 victory against SC Freiburg. In tomorrow’s CL clash (9pm, live on Amazon Prime Video) against Manchester City, the 23-year-old will again be much more in demand in defence – especially when it comes to fencing off Erling Haaland.
„Have to concentrate as a whole team“
According to de Ligt, Bayern need to function as a team tomorrow night above all else: „He is one of the best strikers in the world and in very good form. Manchester City have a very good team in general. We have to stay concentrated and focused with our whole team. We have to be top tomorrow. Everyone knows what Haaland can do. But in the end you also have to focus on your tasks. We’ll see how we can stop him together as a team,“ he stressed at the pre-match PK.
The Dutchman also made it clear that the best way to get a grip on Haaland is to stop the passes to him: „Of course, the game is complicated. It is important that we organise the defence well. Haaland is a very good player, but without the good passes from his teammates, it’s also difficult for him. We have to put in a top performance with the whole team.“
