Sadio Mané will don the 17 on his back, following in the footsteps of towering defender Jérôme Boateng and FC Bayern’s only non-German captain yet, tenacious defensive midfielder Mark van Bommel
Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui, both coming in from AFC Ajax in Amsterdam, will wear 38 and 40 respectively. There is no reason in particular (or at least specified by either player or club), but it does raise eyebrows when lower digits are still available, notably 4, 14 (minus Wanner/Zirkzee) 15, 16, 22, 24, and so on
Although the professional first-team trio have chosen new numbers, youth players promoted into the first team have also reshuffled within the ranks. Mazraoui has taken Malik Tillman’s old 40, which means he will now have 37 printed on his jerseys instead. Fellow youth academy player Gabriel Vidović will pick up the baton from Holger Badstuber wearing 28, with his contract until mid-2025
