The former Bayern defender has dished out the criticism for his old side’s newest acquisition.
Holger Badstuber has declared that Dayot Upamecano can not be a leader of the Bavarian backline as he will need support around him.
The French defender will see his four-year spell at RB Leipzig finish at season’s end when he moves to the current league leaders. There was a host of teams vying for his services but it was Bayern who ultimately secured a €42.5 million (£36m/$50m) deal for the defender and speaking to BILD, Badstuber says we should halt the expectations surround the exciting youngster.
“Such a young player does not come to Bayern and is the leader. I do not hear him. You cannot be a leader if you are so calm,” Badstuber said. “You have to direct, give instructions. I see Lucas Hernandez there!”
Upamecano is a very talented defender after putting together some seriously impressive performances and Bayern took notice and went all in to sign him.
With the impending departure of David Alaba and also the uncertainty surrounding Jerome Boateng’s future, Upamecano will help alleviate the potential loss of both players as they look to continue to dominate both the domestic and European competitions.
Bayern will hope Upamecano can fill the boots of the Austrian as they bid to continue their dominance on domestic and European fronts.
Upamecano will face his team-to-be when Leipzig faces Bayern in what is shaping up as a potential title decider as Leipzig will need nothing less than three points. Anything less will surely give Bayern a true stranglehold on the Bundesliga title.
