England U/21 manager Aidy Boothroyd gave this thoughts on Jamal Musiala’s decision to choose Germany over England.
There was a very public tug of war for Musiala who has been putting forth superb performances for Bayern Munich with both nations optimistic of their chances of securing such a rare talent. However, after Musiala’s decision to chose Germany over the Three Lions, is it widely speculated that he will be apart of the Germany squad for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Musiala had made his debut for the young Three Lions under Boothroyd and he would have been in line to represent the U/21 side in the group phase of the European Championship.
Boothroyd spoke to reporters about the young midfield star as he revealed his squad for the tournament.
“Jamal is a very measured young man,” Boothroyd told reporters at the unveiling of his squad. “He’s obviously thought it through. “When you’re working in Germany, speak German and you live with your German mum, it’s very difficult to persuade him that he’s actually English. “It was his decision, he talked about having a heart for Germany and I totally understand that. We wish him the best of luck and we move on and focus on the players who want to be part of what we want to build.”
To get an idea of just how good Musiala is, he became the youngest English and German scorer in the Champions League after he gave his side a stranglehold in their last-16 tie with Lazio, finishing well from outside the box to give Bayern a 2-0 lead. That was just the latest record broken by the star as he was also Bayern’s youngest ever player to play as well as score for the German giants.
Many felt that Musiala’s international future would be decided on where he would sign his first professional contract and although there was concrete interest from a host of Premier League clubs, the youngster signed a new deal that keeps him at the Allianz until 2026.
It is clear that Bayern has an incredible talent on their hands, and now he can showcase his talent for the German national team as well.
