Hansi Flick has confirmed that Benjamin Pavard will miss the weekend’s Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund this weekend.
Both Pavard and Douglas Costa returned to training at Sabener Strasse this week – Pavard returning from his bout with coronavirus, while Costa returns two weeks after picking up a hairline fracture to his right-metatarsal in the buildup to Bayern’s game against Arminia Bielefeld.
“I can confirm that Benjamin Pavard won’t be available,” Flick said in his pre-match press conference.
“You need a plan to gradually increase your workload after an illness like that. The plan is for him to be fully involved next week.”
On Costa, an official Bayern statement read: “Douglas Costa has taken the next step towards a comeback. The FC Bayern offensive player completed his first running session at Säbener Straße on Thursday morning after suffering a hairline fracture in his right metatarsal in training in mid-February. Costa has made 20 competitive appearances so far this season.”
German newspaper BILD provided more details on Costa’s return, claiming that the Juventus-loanee completed a training session that lasted 20 minutes consisting mainly of lateral movements.
They also reported that he felt some pain in his right foot. No official comment has been made by the club, yet.
Flick, however, is confident that his side are strong enough to pull off another win over their fierce rivals. He added: “When Thomas and Serge came back, the requirements were different. Now we have a bigger squad again.
“We look forward to seeing Benji back next week. It wouldn’t have been a huge risk to put Pavard on the bench, but we currently have enough players to replace him.”
