David Alaba has officially announced that he will be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the current season. The defender’s departure comes after a 13-year spell with the Bavarians, where he won a host of trophies, including a sextuple in the last nine months.

The 28-year-old will depart the Allianz Arena on a free transfer once his contract expires in June. He has been linked to a number of top clubs, including Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

Speaking at an unscheduled press conference, Alaba said: “I have personally made the decision to try something new after this season and to leave the club.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, I’ve been here for 13 years and the club is very important to me.

“I am looking for a new challenge. It wasn’t a financial decision. I still have six to seven years to play football and now I wanted to try something new.

“Of course I took my time, after 13 years it’s not an easy decision. I then decided for myself to try something new. I have not decided yet where I’m going.”

He added that his representatives are in contact with other clubs, but insisted he has not yet made a decision. However, he did add: “My Spanish is not good, but good enough for the pitch.”

Not making a move for the money

Alaba admitted that money is not the main reason why he is looking to move, and said: “Money was not a factor for me.

“I think we always had a good relationship internally. I am deeply grateful to them too. We had several conversations and something developed there. I then just made the decision for myself.”

He also added that he wants to take on a new challenge and has four-five years before he decides to hang up his football boots.

Alaba said: “I still have six to seven years to play football and now I wanted to do something new. I would like to have a new sporting challenge so that I can develop myself further as a person off the field.”

While it is undoubtedly sad to see him leave, everyone at fcbinside wishes David Alaba the best of luck in the next step of his career!
