Bayern Munich announced the signing of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano last week after activating his €42.5 million release clause. He will link up with Hansi Flick’s side on July 1, 2021, after signing a five-year deal.

Upamecano’s signing is expected to fill the potential gap expected by David Alaba’s departure in the summer. The 22-year-old will compete for playing time at center-back with Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez, Chris Richards, and Tanguy Nianzou.

The entire transfer amount has not been revealed yet, but triggering Upamecano’s release clause made him the third-most-expensive player the Bundesliga giants have signed to date.

Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane are ahead of the Frenchman on the list, with his international teammate Corentin Tolisso falling to fourth.

The most expensive newcomers at FC Bayern:

  • Lucas Hernandez: €80 million
  • Leroy Sane: €45 million
  • Dayot Upamecano: €42.5 million
  • Corentin Tolisso: €41.5 million
  • Javi Martinez: €40 million
  • Arturo Vidal: €39.25 million
  • Mario Götze: €37 million
  • Mats Hummels: €35 million
  • Renato Sanches: €35 million
  • Benjamin Pavard: €35 million

Upamecano was a long-term target for a number of top European clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Real Madrid.

But Bayern pulled off a real coup to land the talent center-back, and Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic is pleased with his side’s business.

“We are happy that we were able to win Dayot Upamecano for FC Bayern Munich,” sporting director he told the club’s official website.

“Dayot will be a very important component for our team in the coming years, we are convinced of that.”
