The 20-year-old defender who is so highly rated will complete the season away from the league leaders.

Chris Richards will finish the rest of the season on loan at Hoffenheim with the US international seeking more game time. There will be chances for the youngster at the Allianz Arena, having already appeared eight times.

Bayern expects Richards to be a top-quality defender, but they know he must get regular game time in order to keep improving, something which he is currently not getting with Bayern. The club thinks they have found the perfect place for Richards to develop, at rivals Hoffenheim until the end of the season.

Bayern board member Hasan Salihamidzic spoke to Bayern’s official website about Richards:

“Chris is a great talent. He was a top performer in central defence for our reserves in the third division and has gained experience with the first team, even in the Champions League.

“Together we decided Chris will use the months in Hoffenheim for the next stage of his development. We’re sure TSG will get a lot from him.”

Richards added on taking on a new challenge: “I’m looking forward to taking the next steps in my development in Hoffenheim.

“It’s important I pick up more match practice in the Bundesliga now. I have big goals and I’d like to progress at FC Bayern.”

The young defender has been at the German champions since 2018 after securing a move from MLS side FC Dallas. In total, Richards has made 38 appearances for Bayern’s second-tier side. With four of them coming in the Bundesliga, one in the DFL Supercup, and three in the Champions League.

Rivals Hoffenheim are said to be willing to give Richard minutes with their first team to continue his development. Alexander Rosen, Hoffenheim’s director told his club’s official website:

“Chris is a strong and very fast defender who has already started playing despite the outstanding competition in the Bayern squad,”

Rosen then went on to say that Richards will be an important player for Hoffenheim in defense with their stocks depleted with the injuries of Kevin Akpoguma, Benni Hubner, and Ermin Bicakcic.
