Bayern Munich are reportedly considering offering Jerome Boateng an extension on his current contract.

The 32-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, along with David Alaba and Javi Martinez. And it’s starting to seem that Bayern will hand Boateng a contract renewal, according to a report from Sport1.

The report claims that the club will hold transfer talks with the defender in March and could hand him a one-year extension.

If Alaba and Martinez do leave at the end of the season, the chances of Boateng staying increase significantly. Hansi Flick will be left with two experienced defenders – Niklas Sule and Lucas Hernandez.

Youngster Tanguy Nianzou is yet to make a name for himself and break into the first-team squad. The 18-year-old has suffered two severe injuries after joining from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Recent reports have also linked RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano to Bayern, but his €42million release clause could be a cause for concern.

Speaking to Goal and Spox in November last year, Boateng insisted that he was committed to Bayern and his contract situation was not a big concern for him.

“I was surprised by the coverage and would have liked to have sat down beforehand. But now I don’t deal with it anymore,” he said.

“I have always said that I would like to get to know something different and take on a new challenge. I feel really good and in top shape and have delivered and performed in the last few months. That is also the feedback I get from [Bayern coach] Hansi Flick and my team-mates. That is the most important thing for me.

“My focus is 100 per cent on defending the five titles from last season with the club. When the day comes when we part ways, I will look back proudly on these years and many successes with this club. Not many footballers are allowed to experience something like this. At the same time, I look ahead full of motivation and look forward to what’s coming.”
