Bayern Munich have reportedly registered an interest in Reading’s highly-rated left-back Omar Richards.
The U21 England international is out of contract in the summer, and according to The Telegraph, is unlikely to sign fresh terms with the Championship club.
The report claims that Bundesliga champions Bayern are considering making a move for the 22-year-old, who would be available to sign a pre-contract with Hansi Flick’s side.
Richards has made 20 appearances for Reading so far this season, and has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Everton, Brighton, West Ham, and Crystal Palace.
If he does make the move to Bayern, Richards would link up with fellow Englishman, Jamal Musiala. However, he would also be competing with current left-back Alphonso Davies for the position.
Davies has taken the league by storm since joining from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019. He also played an important role in the team that won the continental treble, lifting the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League, and the DFB-Pokal.
However, he would be a great addition to the side, in terms of squad depth, especially when David Alaba leaves. Richards has been a great asset to Reading this season, but if Bayern do come in with a formal offer, it will be very hard for the player to say no.
Reading manager Veljko Paunovic spoke about Richards and 19-year-old midfielder Michael Olise’s futures back in December, and admitted that the duo could leave the club in the summer.
The 43-year-old Serbian explained: “When I spoke with our senior board, I definitely encouraged for both to be part of our long-term project.
“I expect the club is working towards putting together the proper offer so we can keep them for the long term.
“We are all aware we want them to be with us for a long time. We’re working towards that.”
