Heading into the winter break Bayern Munich found themselves top of the Bundesliga after back-to-back wins over Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen. Just two points separate Hansi Flick’s side from Leverkusen and RB Leipzig heading into matchday 14.

The German champions welcome struggling Mainz to the Allianz Arena who are currently in 17th place in the league and just five points clear of the relegation zone as it is clear that they have a long road ahead of them to stay in the German topflight.

It has not been since the 2015-16 season in which Mainz have managed to get the better of Bayern and that came at the Allianz Arena.

Out of a possible 18 points available, Mainz has taken just five and is winless in their last five league games with three of them ending in defeats.

Team news

Bayern Munich

Hansi Flick has a full squad to choose from apart from young 18-year-old Tanguy Niazou who is out with a thigh injury. Bayern will have all their attacking weapons available for their first match post-winter break.

Mainz

Mainz coach Jan Siewert will be without both Philipp Mwene and Moussa Niakhate who are out with a thigh strain and suspension respectively.

Levin Oztunal and Adam Szalai are doubts with Oztunal suffering from a knee injury and Szalai still recovering from a thigh injury.

Bayern is in good form domestically, taking 12 points from a possible 18 and during that stretch winning top of the table clashes against Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen. Munich has a plus four-goal difference in their last six matches having scored 12 and conceded just eight.

Everything is pointing to yet another Bayern win on Sunday. Expect Robert Lewandowski to start the new year the same way he finished 2020, scoring goals.

Predicted line up: Neuer, Davies, Hernandez, Boateng, Sule, Tolisso, Alaba, Gnabry, Muller, Koman, Lewandowski.

Scoreline: Bayern 3-1 Mainz
