Leon Goretzka joined Bayern Munich in summer 2018 from FC Schalke 04 to FC Bayern on a free transfer. The midfielder has developed into a regular and key player in Munich over the past two years. However, Goretzka almost did not end up at the Isar. According to his own statements, he could have moved to the English Premier League.
When the 25-year-old came to Munich more than two years ago, there was great scepticism as to whether he would be able to assert himself in Bayern’s highly competitive midfield. Like so many players Goretzka had a difficult start at Bayern, but since the 2019/20 season Goretzka has established himself at the German record champions. Especially under Hansi Flick, he has made another big leap. Together with Joshua Kimmich Goretzka forms the new dream duo in the Bayern midfield.
This success story almost didn’t come to fruition. At the time, Liverpool FC were interested in Goretzka as well as Bayern.
“It took me a long time to make my decision”
Speaking to “The Atheltic”, Goretzka confirmed the Reds’ interest: “They were a consideration, of course. They are a great club. Their development since Klopp has been amazing. But it took me a long time to make my decision”. In the end, however, he opted for Bayern and did so with conviction: “I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me”.
